Privacy and Security for Health Exchanges

Jim Cabral, a Senior Manager with MTG, and Bob Slaski with Open Networks discussed privacy and security requirements and architectures for health exchanges including prescription drug monitoring at the IJIS Industry Briefing on January 6, 2011.

This presentation describes the challenges that have arisen in the exchange of controlled substance prescription history data between state prescription monitoring programs (PMPs).  It outlines the privacy and security requirements with which PMPs must comply in gathering and disseminating prescription history data under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  It also explains how privacy and security requirements were met in the PMP Information Exchange (PMIX) Project by an implementation based on the Global Reference Architecture (GRA).
